However, Silva could resist postseason action as the Premier League released new strict protocols earlier in the week to curb the spread of coronavirus among squads, which led to include a ban on changing or giving away shirts with maids wear.

Richarlison Everton pulled off the same move when the Toffees visited Fulham back in November, but received no penalty.

The 22-year-old overtook goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in the 78th minute to end a three-game run without Chelsea’s Premier League stretching back to before Christmas.

Fulham backup Antonee Robinson was sent off for a flying tackle on Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta just before half-time to give the Blues a numerical advantage in the second half.

“I think it was (essential goal),” the Chelsea boss said. “I think considering Fulham ‘s recent form and our recent form going into the game.

“For us, we know we wanted to win and we needed to win. The players approached him really well, we started the first half, we got control of the game. Slightly sloppy at the end of the first half but with 10 men the challenge was ‘can we take advantage of this?’.

“Can we live in half of them? Can we bring them to an opening? Can we move the ball quickly? And it wasn’t easy, they know what they have to do.

“Then Mason scored the goal and his overall performance in the game was outstanding but the spirit of the whole team and the desire to win that game was great.”
