A new Israeli study states that training treatment combined with Pfizer’s corona vaccine does not cause serious side effects. The study examined 134 patients and found that they did not suffer from an over-prevalence of immune side effects nor was there an increase in severe vaccine side effects. Doctors hope that thanks to the study, the international guidelines will be reformulated in a way that will encourage vaccination even among this unique group.
In an important study published this week in the prestigious journal Lancet Oncology, Dr. Berliz Weingarten, a specialist in oncology at Ichilov Hospital and director of the department Prof. Ido Wolf, sought to find out whether the administration of Pfizer to Corona involves abnormal side effects in cancer patients receiving active treatment.
Experts in Israel and around the world have raised the concern that the combination of training treatment together with the vaccine for corona, could cause both severe side effects of the vaccine and severe training side effects. Some experts have even warned against vaccinating this population. Despite this, the recommendation of the oncology department at Ichilov Hospital was also to vaccinate patients receiving training treatment.
The study, conducted in collaboration with the Bnei Zion Medical Center, identified 134 patients who were treated with training drugs and received the two vaccine doses of corona. The doctors examined whether they had abnormal side effects about two weeks after each vaccine dose, compared to a control group of medical center staff. Who also received two vaccine doses and participated in a side effect survey.
The side effects examined were fever, nausea, muscle aches, diarrhea, etc., as well as side effects associated with the training treatment and in particular autoimmune effects such as immune pneumonia or damage to the thyroid gland and liver.
It was found that the patients did not suffer from an over-prevalence of training side effects. In addition, no increase in serious side effects of the vaccine itself was found.
The study is very important – it provides, for the first time, valuable information about vaccine safety among patients who are at particularly high risk of mortality. Doctors hope that thanks to the study, the international guidelines will be reformulated in a way that will encourage vaccination among this unique group as well.
