JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South Africa’s health minister said on Wednesday that the country would vaccinate health workers with Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine in the form of an “implementation study” in partnership with the Medical Examination Council.

“This will provide valuable information about the pandemic in the community after vaccination and as such, will ensure the early detection of outbreaks if they occur among vaccine health workers,” said Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

He also said vaccine doses from Pfizer have been secured for the first phase of the vaccine aimed at health workers.
