Pirlo says Juventus lost Porto ‘s influence on a’ silver platter ‘, Sports News said

Cristiano Ronaldo’s first game for Juventus in his native Portugal ended in a 2-1 loss as FC Porto played out of the Italians for much of the Champions League on Wednesday-16, first leg connection.

Juve had such a poor performance that coach Andrea Pirlo said his team beat their guests on a “silver platter”.

Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi put Porto ahead after just a minute at Estadio for Dragao following a Rodrigo Bentancur error.

And Mali striker Moussa Marega took a second just after the break.

But Federico Chiesa pulled a goal back with eight minutes to go to keep Juventus away with a second leg in Turin on March 9.

“The approach was wrong from the first minute,” Pirlo said.

“When you give in to a goal like this it’s normal to have fear coming in, you’re not too sure.

“Porto are good at shutting down and after that goal it was a lot harder. We served them the game they wanted on silver plates.

“Luckily we got an important goal through Chiesa and now we’ll focus on the returning leg.”

He was a sub-par achievement with Juventus, running for the third Champions League title and debut in 25 years.

Ronaldo, 36, a Champions League winner, pulled a blank against a side that was his Portuguese international team player Pepe, while the visitors struggled to overcome their early blunder.

“We did a good job of Juventus,” said defender Pepe, who won three Champions League titles with Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

“We knew we had to push hard to keep Juventus from playing. In those types of games it’s hard to capture goals at home, but we played a good game.”

It was a terrible start for Juventus, with Wojciech Szczesny sending the ball out to Bentancur, who went back to the Polish goalkeeper despite Taremi being just in front of goal.

The Irishman quickly shouted past Szczesny for his first goal in the Champions League.

Porto went ahead with Juventus almost conceding a second on 23 minutes when Szczesny netted directly to Sergio Oliveira and his shot was deflected off the goal.

To add to the woes of Andrea Pirlo ‘s woes, Giorgio Chiellini, he went off 10 minutes later with defender Merih Demiral coming off the bench.

Pirlo had removed Juve’s defense with Leonardo Bonucci out injured with Alex Sandro returning, playing alongside veteran Chiellini, Matthijs de Ligt and Danilo.

Juve had to wait until four minutes before the break for their first goal of the goal with a kick over by Adrien Rabiot abducted by Porto keeper Agustin Marchesin, but the flag had already been hoisted.

The Italians suffered another terrible start in the second half with Marega lifting a Wilson Manafa cross to finish low past Szczęsny.

Ronaldo had to wait until five minutes after the break to get a glimpse of the goal. Weston McKennie shook the ball into the path of the Portuguese star, and his weak effort was thwarted.

However, Chiesa pulled Juventus back into the tie following Rabiot’s run down the right side with a pullback for the Italian to finish into the corner of the net.

“The goal will give us strength for the second leg, and it will definitely be another game,” Chiesa said.

It was Porto ‘s first goal conceded in the home tournament this season for the two – time winners.

Ronaldo was dismissed with penalty appeals after falling under late Sanusi Zaidu’s challenge while the guests held on for their first win over Juventus in five meetings.
