Manchester City are reportedly closing in on tying Kevin De Bruyne in a new contract.

The Belgian player ‘is very close’ to signing a new five-year contract worth more than £ 300,000-a-week, according to Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano.

It comes after Sportsmail reported in October that City were making strong progress with De Bruyne in signing a new contract, raising expectations that he would end his career at the club.

The midfielder is believed to be keen to sign a two-year extension to an existing contract that runs down in 2023.

City had initially planned talks with the 29-year-old near the end of last season but those were pushed back after the Premier League campaign stopped.

City have been looking to reward their big stars for showing loyalty to the club in their legal battle over a two-year Champions League ban imposed by UEFA earlier in the year.

That was later turned down on appeal at the Court of Arbitration of Sport and De Bruyne is the first to stress his commitment.

Although he still had two and a half years left on his current contract, retaining the Premier League and PFA Player of the Year is a huge boost.

If he stayed for this contract in full he would be a Belgian international, based in the Northwest with his wife and three children, 34.

De Bruyne has been at Manchester City for five and a half years now after joining Wolfsburg in 2015 and has won two Premier League titles, four League Cups and an FA Cup.

He was voted PFA Player of the Year last year after a strong campaign, but has just two goals in 17 appearances at a difficult 2020-21 time so far for Guardiola’s men.
