DUBLIN (Reuters) – Ireland reported 101 COVID-19-related deaths on Tuesday, the highest number of deaths diagnosed in a single day since the outbreak began, higher than the highest rate of 93 from 19 January.

The daily death toll is published by the National Public Health Emergency Team and can include deaths that occurred weeks ago but were confirmed to the authorities on the day in question.

The team said 83 of the reported deaths occurred Tuesday in January, with 18 occurring in February.

The high mortality rate follows a sharp rise in disease in the first month of the year after a break in public health measures over the Christmas period.

“This is the highest number of deaths we have reported on a single day of COVID-19 epidemic to date,” said Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan.

“The high mortality rate we are currently experiencing as a country is related to the increase in disease we have seen in recent weeks, and the hospitalization and ICU admissions that have followed as a direct result. . ”

There have been 3,418 COVID-19-related deaths in Ireland.
