The Argentinian was an unused substitute in a 1-0 win over Arsenal but the City boss says he will soon have game time
Pep Guardiola says he can’t wait to get Sergio Aguero back to his side but doesn’t want to risk the Manchester City striker suffering.
Aguero was on the bench for City’s 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday but failed to get on the pitch.
He was also an unused substitute in the recent winners over Tottenham and Everton but the City boss insists his time will come.
What was said?
“I’m looking forward to putting him aside,” Guardiola said after his win at the Emirates. “We can’t forget that it was a long time hurt and you can only get rhythm when you play minutes.
“As soon as I can he plays because he deserves it and I want him. I want to say for him to keep working hard as his time comes.
“He only played a few minutes this season and he was injured last season. I want to make sure, for him, for us as soon as I see him play. ”
Why has he played so little?
Aguero missed the start of the season after undergoing surgery in the summer after suffering a knee injury just two games after being locked up.
He came back in October but suffered a major halt, which forced him to go out for another month.
His last appearance was a late substitute in a 3-1 win over Chelsea on January 3 but then he had to self-destruct after coming up with a close connection with someone with COVID-19 before it is the disease itself.
Why is it important for him to return?
City will stay in four tournaments and their fixture record will test the depth of Guardiola’s squad with two games a week between now and the end of the season.
Aguero is also out of contract in the summer and needs time on the pitch with no talks on a new contract yet.
But Guardiola is going to be careful with the Argentinian to make sure he doesn’t suffer another major hurdle after such a long time out through injury.
