You may still be able to upgrade your old Windows 7, 8.1 PCs to Windows 10 for free – Latest News

When Microsoft announced the free Windows 10 update program in 2015 it was supposed to last for a year. However, if you still have an old Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 computer at home, you may be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, even now after four years. What is important is that you must have the original Windows 7 or Windows 8 systems.

According to a report by Windows Latest, “Users with the added license of Windows 7 can upgrade to Windows 10 and get a digital license for free.” On the other hand, you are in luck if you do not have a genuine Windows 7 or 8 license.

To upgrade to Windows 10, go to the Windows 10 download page and open ‘Download tool now’. Go to Media Creation Tool and click on ‘Update this PC now’. Agree to terms and conditions. Select the update option that allows you to save your files. Do not select a new installation. If you attempt to perform a new installation through Media Creation Toll the Windows 10 update may no longer be free.

Once you have installed Windows 10, click on Windows Update and select ‘Activation’. Once your PC is connected to the Microsoft servers you will receive the digital license.

Meanwhile, if you have an old PC running Windows, you may be able to officially run Chrome OS and extend its life. Google has quietly acquired Neverware – the company that makes CloudReady that allows old Windows PC users to run Chrome OS smoothly. So, if you have a Windows PC that works properly and is running without the need of Windows 7 or XP, you can convert it to Chromebook as well.
