When it comes to the names of Microsoft video game consoles, the branding of Xbox Series X and Series S can be a bit confusing for the unrecognized. Between original consoles and the various remodels that Microsoft has offered for its systems over the years, it’s clear that the company’s branding isn’t as straightforward as the PlayStation’s numbered offerings offer. In an interview with IGN, Exit Developer Josef Fares stressed out the names of Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, showing how confusing it can be, both for newcomers to the world. Xbox brand, and even for those who work for Microsoft!

Whatever tokens gamers prefer, it’s hard to agree with Fares ’decision. The branding of the Xbox Series X is very confusing, especially given how close the name is to the Xbox One X, and how similar the Xbox Series S is to the Xbox One S. The naming collection is definitely a ‘annoying some parents, and even buying wrong tokens could result in buying it.
At this point, it’s too late for Microsoft to change things, so gamers just have to stick to the Xbox Series X | S this time. With some backlash against the name, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft decides to go with something a little clearer in the future. While Microsoft couldn’t imitate Sony’s numbered branding, Nintendo has succeeded with most token announcements; it would be easier for Microsoft to follow Nintendo’s approach, offering simpler, simpler names.
