Wednesday marked the return of one of the most rare reality shows that has gained success on American television, and that says a lot. The Masked Singer season five bribe with guest Niecy Nash introduces step for Nick Cannon at COVID-positive, a secret rocker hiding clues from the judges, and a crop of masked new crooners.

If you are unfamiliar with the basics of the Fox series, it is basically a singing competition where celebrities (or “celebrities”) sing complex karaoke rituals while the judges Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke scour video files for ads about who might be under the masks.

Wednesday’s first release featured performances by five of the season’s top ten contestants: Raccoon, Snail, Seashell, Russian Doll, and Robpine (a porcupine robot, just in case. Fans for who was under the masks on Wednesday ranged from Jamie Foxx to Jessica Simpson to Ginuwine. [Spoiler ahead.]

Seilche. Judges for who performed Hall & Oats’ “Make My Dreams” with a country string included Adam Carolla, Billy Crystal, and Jay Leno. But when the Snail’s top hat was removed, no celebrity’s head was to be seen. Instead, it was Kermit the Frog who came out of the snail shell. Yep, that’s right. While the judges were judging real people as chumps, it was Muppet. Or at least puppy Matt Vogel.

Based on the suits it’s obvious that real people are behind at least some of the voices this season, but it’s not yet clear whether the Russian Doll is one person, two people, a whole family of people? Or, if the appearance was any indication, it may be just a tree full of Keebler elves.
