The film is set in February 2049 and will take place three weeks after the “event”, but it will not be clear what the event was. The Midnight Sky is an adaptation of a book by Lily Brooks-Dalton, Good Morning, Midnight. While the book also did not provide a reason behind the catastrophic event, it is clear that the characters were not surprised that this happened. Aether is in place to prove the potential life of K-23 which is one of Jupiter’s branches that Augustine discovered.
When he returns to Earth, the plan for K-23 colony flight must be in place. But the film shows that the remaining fields were underground and temporary. Augustine is ill with an undiagnosed illness but Clooney said the scientist is suffering from radiation poisoning.
