What new locking restrictions mean for Israelis

Ministers on Tuesday voted to tighten the current lockout after restrictions imposed a week ago failed to bring down the level of coronavirus infection. The latest version of the lockout seems to have created confusion among the public as to what exactly the changes are.

When will the lock start and how long will it be?

The lockout will begin at midnight on Friday and is currently expected to last at least two weeks.

According to the outline, subject to permission from the government and the Knesset, the entire country’s education system, including nurseries, will close. Special educational resources appear to be the only thing at this stage.

Gatherings will be reduced to five in a confined space and 10 outdoors.

As before with locks, leisure, entertainment and cultural centers will be closed. Restaurants can only offer delivery services, no takeaway food.

People cannot go up to 1,000 meters from their homes, unless they want to get essential services, get the vaccine or engage in individual sporting activity.

Visits to other people’s homes are also prohibited, except in emergencies.

Will public transport continue to work?

Public transport operates at 50% of its full capacity.

Protests will be allowed to continue, with demonstrators at a distance of two meters apart and wearing a protective face mask.
