During the mayoral campaign, Berkowitz threatened to sue Elkin, claiming that the latter was covertly behind a negative campaign circulated against him. The campaign, which Berkowitz claims was sent to tens of thousands of Jerusalem residents in text messages, featured his picture alongside the caption “Danger,” and quotes from an article claiming the candidate was funded by a far-left organization and the New Foundation.
In addition, during a confrontation between the mayoral candidates, Berkowitz attacked Elkin, who was then Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, for paying NIS 700,000 from his office budget for a speech at the news company’s influencer conference.
“The benefits enjoyed by the minister must be investigated,” Berkowitz said, adding: “The NIS 700,000 should have been transferred to the cleaning of Jerusalem and the transfer of government ministries to the city.” Elkin said in response that the money was transferred with the approval of the ombudsman.
And what about the party chairman?
After defeating Elkin in the first round, Berkowitz competed head to head in the second round against Moshe Leon for the position of mayor.
Gideon Saar, who as mentioned added Brokevich to his list today, sounded completely different then, when he tweeted on his Twitter account ahead of the second round that he was calling on his friends to “support the national camp candidate Moshe Leon.”
