Kraigg Brathwaite has replaced Jason Holder as captain of the West Indies Test side.

Holder took over in 2015 and led the side to 11 wins in 37 Tests, but opted not to travel to Bangladesh for a recent test series that the tourists won 2-0.

The Barbadian member Brathwaite represented and was named by Cricket West Indies (CWI) as their 37th Test captain in the early hours of Friday ahead of a home series against Sri Lanka.

Chief Elector Roger Harper said: “We all believe Kraigg is the right person to lead our Testing side at this time and I am delighted that he has accepted the role.

“In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, Kraigg was able to motivate his players to play at a very high level and establish the culture we are looking at where the a team of collective determination to fight and a real hunger for success. “

Brathwaite, who has appeared in the UK for Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan, said he was “proud and humble” to give him the captain.

He said: “The recent Test Series win in Bangladesh was an outstanding achievement and I look forward to the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka and I am excited about what I believe this team can achieve this in the future. “
