YAOUNDE, Cameroon

Health ministers from the West African country of Guinea and neighboring countries have agreed on a united front to combat the deadly Ebola virus that emerged about three weeks ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Office said ) Wednesday.

In a statement, they said the agreement was reached at a meeting in Guinea’s capital, chaired by Guinea’s prime minister, Dr Ibrahima Kassory.

“If Guinea and neighboring countries were suffering from Ebola, this time around Guinea and the region they are strongly against Ebola,” Kassory said.

WHO said ministers agreed to establish a coordination mechanism, strengthen cross-border cooperation, work with communities, and support efforts in containment of the deadly virus.

It was first discovered in 1976, and the disease caused a global shock in 2014 when the world’s worst uprising began in West Africa, killing more than 11,000 people and around 28,600 suffered when it was swept through Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Health ministers also agreed import regulations to help vaccines and drugs as well as promote measures that were effective in controlling the 2014-2016 Ebola uprising in West Africa.

“We are very encouraged by the widespread opposition to Guinea’s neighbors in tackling this behavior. We know from experience how vital this is in fighting Ebola, ”said Dr Abdou Salam Gueye, the regional emergency director at the WHO Office for Africa.

“With close cross-border trade and social ties, we cannot overlook the importance of regional approaches to the health crisis,” he said.
