Turning point:

It was always on the back of my mind that I needed to do something about my health but I hadn’t been heavy enough before. Slowly I gained kilos and realized I had touched 52 kilos! My BMI level was also 29! I couldn’t wear my favorite clothes because of my growing weight. I used to feel so lethargic and bloated all the time.

These made me change. Even though I wasn’t the biggest sports fan, I decided to work out and not include my food. It’s been five months since I lost 10 kilos and there’s no looking back!

My breakfast: I like to cook or eat a healthier mix of regular flavors. For the first meal of the day, I either choose something like oat masala / quinoa / moong daal daliya (made in one tablespoon ghee and loads of vegetables) / grains (whole grain flakes like oats, rye, barley) without sugar or almond milk.

My lunch: For lunch, just 1-2 small chapatis with vegetable subzi.

My dinner: I like to have something light for dinner. Usually tomato soup moong dal / vegetable rice / daal khichdi / jowar-ragi roti with veggies / paneer preparation made in ghee.

Pre-workout meals: Since it is the only work I do for a walk, I drink a glass of warm water after waking up and before I go for a walk.

Post-work meals: I have my breakfast after walking for 30 minutes.

I include: Although I am a long time foodie, I did not completely eliminate outdoor food, but I was very careful while choosing what I should eat. Usually, I like to make dosa with chutney and sambar in very little oil. If I had to satisfy my taste buds, I would get a bite of food from someone’s plate.

My job: I make it a walking point for at least 30 minutes every day in the evening, whatever. I used to do 8 planks and 120 squats in the morning. Then follow the same email routine.

Plus, here are some of my weight loss tips that have been tried:

1) Make it a stopping point to eat after you feel 80% full, no matter how tasty the dish is.

2) Work out a balanced diet that works for you – it should have the right protein, fiber, vitamins, fats and carbs.

3) Portion control is essential
4) Dinner should be light so that it is easier to digest as our metabolism is slower during the night.

5) Consistency is essential. Whatever plan you come up with, it is important that you follow it until you reach your goal.

6) In addition to a diet plan, you also need to be physically active to extend calorie burning. I made sure to go for a walk at least every day.

Also, make sure you stay active every day even on your rest days.

How do I keep motivated? Some of the gradual changes were like seeing the numbers on the measurement scale go down, experiencing the change in my body shape and not feeling bloated and lethargic anymore enough to motivate me.

How do you make sure you don’t lose focus? After really realizing the importance of being healthy, my focus remained unconscious. I did a lot of research and came up with healthier and equally tasty tasting versions of the common dishes we eat every day so I never felt like I was influencing taste, which helped me stay focused.

What is the hardest part of being obese? I used to feel bloated and lethargic when I was obese. Also, I was not able to wear some of my favorite clothes because of my weight and that was not the best feeling in the world.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I want to stay as healthy and fit as I am today. I also want to change people’s perception of diet food. We need to understand that diet food can be both tasty and healthy at the same time. I also find myself creating healthy versions of a variety of delicious foods and inspiring others in their weight loss journey.

What lifestyle changes have you made? It’s been 5 months now but my weight is now stable because I didn’t gain any kilos back. When I have food, I monitor my feeling of fullness and listen to my body. I made the following changes in my kitchen as I embarked on my fitness journey.

I also eliminated white sugar, refined oil and salt from my kitchen. I developed a habit of being active every day unknowingly.

Which is your lowest point? Honestly, I didn’t experience any low points during my weight loss journey as I was always able to come up with healthy versions of my favorite dishes. For that reason, I never felt like I was missing anything. Once I promised to get back in shape, there was no looking back.

Lessons learned from weight loss: Health is indeed a wealth. After losing weight and making healthy lifestyle changes, I have become more committed to taking care of my family’s health as well. Most of us tend to overdo it when it comes to satisfying our taste buds, so cutting down on portion size is very important. I have understood the importance of ration control.
