One of the great pioneers in English football hung up his shoes. Tonight (Friday) Wayne Rooney announced that he has retired from active play at the age of 35, and he will no longer serve as a player-coach in Derby County. Rooney has accepted the Majer position on a regular basis and will stand on the lines of the Rams until the summer of 2023.
As you may recall, Ronny returned to the kingdom last season after two years in the MLS league, where he starred in a Dee uniform. si. United. After the dismissal of Philip Coco in November Rooney has been given the opportunity and now, he will officially start the new chapter in his life.
Rooney became an icon thanks to his time in the Manchester United uniform where he scored 253 goals and issued 146 assists in 559 games in all competitions. To his credit are 17 team titles from the period with the Red Devils, with the biggest of all of course being the Champions League title in the 07/08 season. Apart from that the striker also won the important personal title in the Premier League – Player of the Year in the 09/10 season. In addition he is the all-time top scorer for the England national team with 53 conquests in 120 appearances.
Earlier, Rooney made his first steps in the Everton uniform where he became the second youngest conqueror in the club’s history at the age of 16 and 360 days. In the Topis uniform, he managed to make 117 appearances before making Alex Ferguson’s United leap.
Now, he faces a particularly challenging task and he will try to bring Derby back to the Premier League after 13 years in a row in the minor leagues. In any case, it seems that this season will be an impossible task as his team is ranked 22nd after 22 rounds and has only 19 points to its credit.
