Tonight (February 27), D’Angelo is directing a live VERZUZ event from Apollo Theater, taking the stage as a solo actor with DJ Scratch alongside other collaborators. Check out Instagram or Apple Music.
D’Angelo’s set broke from the usual VERZUZ format: so far his events have been one-on-one battles with occasional amazing guests, as Dionne Warwick drops in on Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle last year. Noting the style change opened with new material alongside trumpeter Keyon Harrold before covering Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin”. Method Man and Redman came out for “Left & Right” before Method Man took the lead for “Break Ups 2 Make Ups.”
The singer ‘s latest album was 2014 The Black Messiah, and the 2019 documentary The Devil’s Piece saying it has worked to follow.
