Disney Plus’ WandaVision passed, by cottage industry WandaVision theories drying up with it, but a completely new subspecies of it WandaVision conversations have arisen to fill the hex-shaped hole in our hearts: the “explain WandaVision us ”interview format. Earlier this week, series creator Matt Shakman sat down with Kevin Smith to discuss what was going on with the Agatha Harkness bunch, revealing the erasure of a scene where he became a demon, and now a leading writer Jac Schaeffer has revealed some of her own Hollywood Reporter– includes an explanation of why Evan Peters was cast as the deceptive version of Pietro and how the Disney PR machine inadvertently ruined what the writers thought would be very appealing.

As for Peters, who played a different incarnation of Wanda Pietro’s brother in Fox X-Men films, Schaeffer says she didn’t want it to be like a “gimmick,” but a meta version of Wanda’s knowledge that it is “apparently to be her brother ”but clearly not.” Schaeffer says she thought it was a great way to let the audience feel that “something is wrong here” by throwing Peters, because they would recognize not immediately the correct version of Pietro (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron). It’s a reasonable explanation, sure, but one could say that the exact result could be achieved by throwing any actor but Taylor-Johnson, and then no one would have jumped to decisions about the X-Men being integrated into the MCU.

On a similar note, Schaeffer didn’t seem to really expect Marvel fans to run with the theories as much as they did, saying she was “a little nervous” when comments about Mephisto or Magneto they started getting online. She says she didn’t “want to break any promises” with the show, but at the same time they never suggested that “some big bad guy” would run things behind the scenes. . Wanda’s grief was always intended to be the “true antagonist,” so it seems there was never a place where there was a greater threat from the comics outside Agatha Harkness to be involved.

Another interesting detail from the interview is that Schaeffer says they did not intend to first announce that Teyonah Parris was playing Monica Rambeau (who was last seen as a small indoor child Captain Marvel) ahead of time. That means the news that she wasn’t just a neighbor named Geraldine would have been a big surprise, but Disney and Marvel Studios ended up damaging a twist that was twisting themselves at Comic-Con years ago while Schaeffer and the other writers were still putting together the story they wanted to tell.

Rather than be bitter about it, however, Schaeffer understands that the twist turned out differently than expected. Instead of thinking she was not a special person and then finding out the truth, fans knew she was a special person prematurely but then they got a chance to experience a secret why the show – and the show within a show – let out otherwise. Now, does anyone else have any questions? WandaVision that someone on the creative team can deal with it? Maybe “why was the special space truck that Monica wanted to drive into the Hex such a piece? ”
