While the global count of COVID-19 cases exceeds 80 million, the U.S. remains a leader among nations
Here’s what’s happening Saturday with the pandemic in the US:
THREE THINGS TO FIND TODAY
– The US is largely the leading country in COVID-19 cases as the number of infections worldwide was 80 million. Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University revealed the mark Saturday morning after 472,000 cases were recorded over Christmas worldwide. The number of deaths associated with pandemic coronavirus worldwide is 1.75 million. The US has reported 18.8 million infections, followed by India with 10.2 million and Brazil with 7.45 million.
– The pandemic is affecting the census of the homeless. Federal officials and advocates fear that the 2020 Census has outnumbered the number of homeless residents. The Census Bureau identified 33,000 homeless camps last spring for census takers to visit but postponed the count until it collapsed due to COVID-19. Now the General Accounting Office says the pandemic-fueled economy could reduce the count as employed people who responded to the Census this spring may be out of work and on the street.
– A COVID-19 community rescue line was among emergency communications out of order in Nashville, Tennessee, after a recreational vehicle exploded in the city center early Christmas morning. The explosion affected AT&T’s headquarters, knocking down police emergency systems across Tennessee and Kentucky. Authorities believe the explosion was deliberate but have said they do not know why.
NUMBERS: The seven-day follow-up average for new daily deaths in the U.S. over the past two weeks declined from 1,841.7 on Dec. 11 to 1,747.9 on Dec. 25, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
DEFAULT: The number of COVID-19-related deaths in the U.S. stands at 330,345.
QUESTIONNAIRE: “If I were white I wouldn’t go through that. This is how black people are killed, when you send them home, and they don’t know how to fight for themselves, “Dr. Susan Moore, a Black doctor, said in a Facebook post in the she accused Indianapolis hospital of treating her COVID-19 differently because of her race Moore died December 20. The IU Northern Health Hospital in Carmel has promised “a full review from the side outside. “
ICYMI: The Duke’s women’s basketball team has ended their season amid coronary virus infection. The team’s roster made the decision Friday. The team had postponed three games since Dec. 16 due to two positive trials in the women’s basketball community.
ON THE HORIZON: President Trump is spending the golfing weekend at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Springs with a COVID-19 relief package sent by Congress in doubt. He reiterated in a tweet Friday night that motivational checks should bring in $ 2,000 to most Americans instead of $ 600. A spokesman said he was briefed on the Nashville bombing but he did not make public statements about it.
