Vikings creator Michael Hirst (The Tudors, Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age) revealed in a recent special interview some of the surprises that fans can expect in those final moments, while also revealing the show’s legacy.
Warning: Spoilers for Vikings Season 6B ahead.
In case you’re wondering if the stars Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Kathryn Winnick) could feature in the final run, Hirst told me: “There are two answers to that. One is that Ragnar will never leave. Ragnar, before his death, a semi-mythical character, is always talked about in the great hall. His saga is already part of viking history and the meaning of viking life. I tried very hard to keep him alive within the story – everyone compares himself to him, comparing his son to Ragnar, he’s always in the story. ”
“All I can say is, these last 10 events are full of weird things. So you have to wait and see, ”said Hirst.
Hirst also talked about the decision to kill Lagertha early in the sixth season of the 20-program, instead of keeping the fan-favorite character alive through the end of the show. Kathryn Winnick’s character died in the first half of Season 6, which began History in early 2020.
“I’ve never done it that way – I never came back and thought, ‘It might be useful to keep Lagertha alive,'” Hirst explained. “I wrote it out in my own head and on a finish paper I thought was worthy of it. ”

Lagertha certainly had a fitting ending, with the seventh episode of Season 6, “The Ice Maiden,” dedicated to her funeral. “I wanted that to be a big event,” Hirst said.
Of course, Vikings it has previously lost key players, including Ragnar Lothbrok himself, played by Travis Fimmel, around whom the show was originally based. Ragnar died back in Season 4.
Hirst said there was never any doubt Vikings could – and would continue – without Fimmel and Ragnar.
“I had already proved that Ragnar was going to die and that his sons were going to take over. I wanted to get there. For me, there was a historical need for that, and poetry for that too, ”said the show’s creator.
“The Americans warned me – or at least some of the Americans involved in the show – that most shows will die if the main character dies and it’s a big gamble. and was I sure I wanted to take that opportunity, ”Hirst explained.
“I said, ‘You know what, Ivar Ivar the Boneless is coming down the line. Do you really think I don’t want to get in, and pay attention to it, and start exploring what Ivar the Boneless did? ‘As well as Bjorn sailing around the Mediterranean, Ivar the Boneless, one of the most famous Vikings of all time. I was absolutely certain that the story would not die with Ragnar, that I had enough weapons to pick it up again and get people to engage with sons. ”
