Victims of the Yemeni children affair? This is how you will receive compensation

The government made a decision today (Monday) according to which the state will compensate each family whose child disappeared in the abducted Yemeni, Eastern and Balkan children, with NIS 150,000-200,000. The bill, submitted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Deputy Prime Minister Bnei Gantz, was passed by an overwhelming majority.
This is a dramatic decision, since beyond compensation, it is the first institutional responsibility of its kind in one of the dismal issues known to the state and continues to be an open wound in Israeli society.

“The Israeli government expresses its sorrow over the events that took place in the early days of the state, and acknowledges the suffering of the families whose children were part of this painful affair,” the bill said.

How can I apply for compensation?

If you are one of the victims of the affair, there are some important criteria and details that you should know:

– Only if you are a member of the families determined in one of the three committees that dealt with the case (Commission of Inquiry into the Detection of Yemeni Children, the Committee to Investigate the Missing Yemeni Children and the State Commission of Inquiry into the Disappearance of Children Among Yemeni Immigrants in 1954-1948) Request for compensation.

The submission can be made between June and November this year only.

The application can be submitted by the parents or siblings of the same child, but because due to the long time that has passed, most of the parents have passed away, the heirs of the same family member will also be allowed to submit the application.

– The proposed resolution divides the amount of compensation according to the circumstances:

NIS 150,000 in the event that the child dies but the family is not given the reason for the death, or the place of his burial is not located or is found with considerable delay.

• 200,000 shekels that happened and it is not known what happened to the child.

– The compensation is for each child – so that families that have more than one child gone, will receive compensation for each child individually.

Receipt of compensation will require receiving written notice that the family waives any monetary claim regarding the provision.

– In total, the state has allocated NIS 162 million to compensate the families.

– The Minister of Finance will establish a steering committee that will determine the dates on which the decision will be implemented.
