ATLANTA: The U.S. will require British airline passengers to pass a negative COVID-19 test before flying, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced.

The US is the latest country to announce new travel restrictions due to a new version of the coronavirus spreading in Britain.

Airline passengers from the United Kingdom must undergo COVID-19 negative tests within three days of their flight and report the results to the airline, the CDC said in a statement Thursday.

The group said the order will be signed on Friday and executed on Monday.

The CDC said due to travel restrictions in place since March, air travel to the US from the UK has been cut by 90%.

Last weekend, the British Prime Minister said that a new version of the coronavirus appeared to be spreading more easily than earlier ones and moving rapidly through England.

Dozens of countries have banned flights from the UK.
