US capital finds first changes in UK, South Africa

WASHINGTON

Coronavirus variants first detected in the UK and South Africa were discovered in Washington DC, regional health director LaQuandra Nesbitt said Thursday.

The UK variant, called B.1.1.7, was found in triplets and the South African variant, B.1.351, in one person, she said at a press conference.

“Not all advanced tests are in order to be detected for changes but only a sample of cases is ordered for changes,” Nesbitt said. “Not all of these advanced cases are either ordered by a DC Public Health laboratory or referred to the CDC for ordering.”

“They are sampling a number of cases so we have returned some of the cases sampled for sequencing as a positive for this variant,” she said.

She was notified of the new series by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) late Wednesday.

At least 35 U.S. states have tested the variables more volatile, according to the CDC.

There are at least 930 cases of various UK and nine of South African variety.
