Unnecessary shops, hairdressers and gyms could remain closed until April

A government source has said businesses could still keep their doors closed for several months as the distribution of the vaccine ramps up across the UK.

Speaking to the Post, the source said Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his government were more concerned about reopening schools than anything else.

They told the announcement: “Schools will be first and everything else will have to take place after that.

“Exercise may be the only exception. The PM holds back to social interaction – is there anything we can do to help a little?

“Could we do a little more of exercise to help people’s mental health? That’s being looked at.”

Despite the devastating damage to the economy by locksmiths, Professor Devi Sridhar, chair of public health at the University of Edinburgh, told Times Radio that they were needed as soon as the disease throughout society.

But she said a plan for a longer period than locking was desperately needed.

She said: “With the numbers we have, there is no other choice.

“For me, it’s a three-pronged strategy – the first one is right now, it’s raw, it’s terrible for the economy and for people’s mental health, but it’s gray.

“Get those numbers down, protect the NHS for the next 12 weeks.

“When we come into March in the hope that numbers are low again and we can accommodate seasonal change, have your tests and tracking and boundary measures in place to eliminate them indeed.

“And then in the summer, instead of taking your foot off the gas and saying‘ let’s open it all up ’, really think‘ how can we prevent this winter from happening again ? “
