UK Space Agency partners with Rolls-Royce to make a nuclear-powered spacecraft engine

A British spacecraft could fly to Mars in half the time it takes now. Rolls-Royce, a British manufacturer of luxury car and aircraft engines, collaborated with the UK Space Agency to create nuclear propulsion engines.

The aerospace group hopes the nuclear-powered engines will help astronauts hit Mars in at least three months and find a deeper exploration of space in the coming decades.

NASA is partnering with Boeing and SpaceX to build a new generation of human-level spacecraft capable of bringing astronauts to the station and expanding research opportunities in orbit. SpaceX’s upcoming Demo-1 flight test is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Transport Capability contract to return human spaceflight launch capabilities to the United States.

The relationship between Rolls-Royce and the UK Space Agency would bring together planetary scientists to study how nuclear technology could be used to “regenerate space travel.”

Dr Graham Turnock, chief executive of the UK Space Agency, said the use of nuclear power in space was a game-changing proposal that could unlock deep-sea flights that could carry humanity to and outside of Mars.

The research would help astronauts grasp the promising potential of an atomic-powered spacecraft and if cosmonauts fly farther and faster into space than ever before using this new technology . ‘

How this invention would help astronauts in the future

A nuclear power engine can allow researchers to gain missions into deep space.

Astronauts are subject to less radiation dosing and travel times cut in half, which can protect them from radiation sickness and disease.

NASA explained that space radiation would put astronauts at high risk from radiation sickness, tumors, and other life-threatening disorders.

Rolls-Royce Defense UK Deputy Chief Executive Dave Gordon said the group is delighted to be collaborating on this innovative initiative with the UKSA to identify space nuclear power technology.

Rolls-Royce claims that the UK has uniquely legitimate potential in this sector, and this project will draw on the UK’s powerful nuclear network and supply chain.

As Rolls-Royce seeks to build capacity to protect the earth, protect our environment and discover our Cosmos, the group looks forward to creating this and new space missions. -new novels in the future.

A spaceship with nuclear power is not new

The concept of a spaceship engine is not inspired by new nuclear power.

Back in 1961, NASA began a proposal for a nuclear-powered engine, but the program ceased in 1972 due to space budget cuts.

More than 45 years later, NASA is now once again focusing on its Nuclear Thermal Transfer (NTP) device.

NASA Space Flight Center manager Doyce ‘Sonny’ Mitchell ‘s NTP project said they are working on a first – generation NTP machine with great development potential.

The timing of the project with NASA remains uncertain.

In the meantime, British Technology Minister Amanda Solloway suggests that nuclear power could help build employment and offer transformational opportunities for space exploration.

It comes after nuclear spacecraft technology was first studied by U.S. scientists in the 1950s and 1960s. However, the software, introduced in Nevada, was piled in 1971.
