Two doses of Pfizer ’99 .96% effective ‘: Double jab weeks apart prevents almost ALL cases of Covid-19, research in Israel suggests

  • An Israeli study has found that only 0.04 per cent of those vaccinated with both doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine went on to develop coronavirus
  • Of the 700,000 people vaccinated, just 300 later contracted Covid-19, and only 16 required hospital treatment, according to preliminary data
  • The vaccine also protects against more contagious variants in the UK, a study suggests

Almost all cases of Covid are prevented by two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, a study suggests.

Data collected in Israel – which leads the world in vaccine distribution – found that only 0.04 percent of those who received the vaccine with both measures went on to improve coronavirus.

Out of 700,000 people who received the vaccine, just 300 later contracted the virus, and only 16 required hospital treatment, according to preliminary data released by Israeli health officials .

The vaccine also protects against the more infectious UK version of Covid-19, the research suggests.

Professor Eyal Leshem, an expert on Israel’s infectious diseases, said the reports were good news. He said: ‘The first results are incredible.

‘After one dose, cases fell sharply and after two, it was just 0.4 per cent.

‘Time will tell, we still need to collect data but these are very encouraging start-up reports.’

More than 30 percent of the Israeli population has been vaccinated, with several studies on its effectiveness having begun.

Dr Leshem said: ‘On the one hand, we are seeing very high community referral rates with 1,000s of cases every day – the highest levels we have seen since the beginning of our -a-mach.

‘But when we look specifically at the hundreds of thousands of Israelis who are getting the vaccine, they will not be infected.

‘And even in those few infected cases, they get a moderate infection – only a few of them have to go to hospital, just a handful with a serious infection and have had to be admitted to hospital.

‘This is what we call real life, ecological evidence of vaccine efficacy – high efficacy of the vaccine.’

Most of those who received the vaccine were over 60, making the results even more remarkable, he said.

Initial studies have also found a significant reduction in cases among those who received a single dose of the vaccine.

Israel provides Pfizer with weekly data updates about their vaccination campaign as part of a cooperation agreement.

  • Iran is set to buy the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine through the back door despite a ban on ‘unreliable’ British vaccines, a released document has revealed. Iran banned vaccines from the UK and US on January 8, but in a dramatic U-turn, the country is said to be buying 36 million doses of Oxford vaccine through India.
