Twitter aims to make the live audio feature accessible to its users by April, a spokesperson for the micro-blogging site said Thursday.
Spaces Twitter competes with Clubhouse, an invitation-only social networking startup group that rose to fame after appearances from tech celebrities Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
At the end of February, Twitter was testing the feature with 1,000 users which started with women and people from marginalized groups.
In March, the social media platform began rolling out locations for Android users around the world. For now, Android users won’t be able to book locations, but will be able to get together and talk in places, with hosting coming soon, according to the company.
The feature that allows users to create public and private audio chat rooms on the microblogging platform was first announced in December last year. But its testing had been limited to just iOS, which is now being extended to include Android users.
“We are expanding to allow more people to join Spaces and listen in! Going out over the last few days, people with Android will now have the opportunity to get together, listen and talk in conversations about Spaces, ”Twitter said in a statement. Twitter first confirmed that it was working on bringing the feature to Android users through a tweet at the end of January.
Announcing the announcement, Twitter officials stressed that these are still early days for Spaces, and also said that their first priority is to build governance, and noted that this is why they use a careful approach to extracting features such as recording conversations, which fans might find among podcasters and monetising Spaces, which could make the feature much more a draw for Twitter influencers.
