Toyota Motor Corp. said. Friday global production in November rose 7% from a year earlier to 828,066 units, marking a record for the month and showing resilience against outbreaks caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
While many other Japanese carmakers logged a decline in the reporting month, Toyota increased production for the third straight month, thanks to strong demand in China and Japan.
Total global production by eight major Japanese retailers, including Toyota, fell 0.3% to 2.36 million units, the first fall in three months, according to data released by the companies.
Production fell by Nissan Motor Co. 5.6% for the 14th straight month of decline as it has shifted its focus to profit from sales volume in departure from the strategy set by its former Chairman Carlos Ghosn.
Like Toyota, Honda Motor Co. has seen some recovery, raising global output 11.4% last month on strong demand in China.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp., a member of a three-way alliance with Nissan and French Renault SA, saw a 25.7% drop in weak domestic demand.
Global sales of the eight manufacturers fell 3.6% on last month from a year earlier to 2.24 million cars.
Toyota sold 852,213 vehicles worldwide, up 1.8% and also a record for the month of November, due to strong sales of its RAV4 sports utility vehicle and Lexus luxury models in China and strong demand for its refurbished Harrier SUV and tight-knit cars in Japan, the company said.
