‘Today was a great start’ – Alonso aims for the top after taking his chances at modern Chelsea Tuchel

The Spanish defender had frozen himself out under Frank Lampard but returned to a goal-scoring action in the weekend over Burnley

Marcos Alonso sets his sights on “the top” after going back in front of Ben Chilwell in a Chelsea packing order under Thomas Tuchel.

The Spanish defender found himself frozen at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard.

Big money was invested by the Blues in England international Chilwell in the summer of 2020, leading to Alonso seeing just three Premier League appearances at the start of the season.

Once Chilwell moved into the sidelines, Alonso found himself on the outside looking inward and facing enough profiteering about his future.

The 30-year-old, however, made his first 90-minute run in 19 weeks when Tuchel put his pack in for his second game as a Lampard fan.

Alonso found the target in the 2-0 win over Burnley with a stunning strike to win that win, and is now setting high targets for the rest of the campaign.

He told Chelsea official website after returning to form and favor: “We knew it would be dangerous against this team with the long balls and the set pieces so I was there to help. It’s been a while since I’ve played but I’ve been working hard and I’m just glad I was ready.

“A lot of things were said out there but I like working, being quiet and talking about the pitch and that was for the fans. It’s great to receive the award and hopefully more to come.

“It was great to help the team with a goal but I am very happy with all three points and very happy for the team. We need to get back to the top, or as close to the top as possible, and today was a great start. ”

Alonso, who was used as a left-back on a regular basis throughout his career, was always able to influence every end of the field.

He hopes those traits will continue to be of good use, with Chelsea looking to push the way back into the four major controversies after they stopped a halt that ended regulation. Lampard.

“I have more freedom to attack because we are better at defending but this is not about the system,” Alonso said. “When we play more organized, all together, knowing what to do and where to be on the pitch this team has great potential to achieve great things.

“We have a long way to go until the end of the season to prove that and prove that we deserve a better place on the record than where we are now but we must fight for it.”

Three points against Burnley have lifted Chelsea to seventh place in the Premier League table, six points out of the top four and 11 behind Manchester City leaders.
