Van Tonder went 6th, 11th and 12th at Karen Nairobi Country Club on Wednesday as he added a 64-run second to his 65-yard opening to finish par 13-under, a shot ahead of formworker Justin Harding and David Drysdale from Scotland.
Australian pair Scott Hend, with a man under 70, and Maverick Antcliff, who shot two under-69s, are now both seven strokes from distance at six for the tournament.

The 30-year-old van Tonder repaired three birds and had two clear views of the field until the second sighting of the day on the 18th.
“It’s a little bit different this week,” van Tonder said. “I’ve found something again. I got some confidence out there so I could hit the driver on most tee boxes and be aggressive getting into the pins. “
Harding won the Kenya Open Championship on the same course Sunday and has continued where he left off with a second round of 66 consisting of seven birdies and two bogs.
“I think the golf course just suits me well,” Harding said. “I think I just need to handle my emotions properly.
“Today I was a little grumpier than I was for the last five days. There’s a lot going on with me I believe but I try to be as calm as I can. “
