After winning its last two games, Zalgiris Kaunas continued today (Wednesday) in great form with a particularly impressive and dramatic 73:74 victory, against Bayern Munich.
Zalgiris Kaunas – Bayern Munich 73:74
The host started well, providing a 0: 9 run in the first quarter, with the help of two Eli-Hop moves and a three by Arturas Milaknis. The one who stopped the run was ex-Maccabi Tel Aviv, Jaylen Reynolds, who finished as Bayern’s leading scorer with 17 points and seven rebounds.
In the second and third quarters Zalgiris managed to maintain a minimum advantage of 5 points, which has cost her dearly in the last ten minutes.
Dennis Silai buried a three and Marius Grigonis missed immediately afterwards. Nick Weiler-Bab added two more points, which set a 72:73 win for Bayern Munich less than 15 seconds to go. But Grigonis scored the winning basket with a 0.6 shot to finish and gave the Lithuanians a prestigious victory against the surprise of the Euroleague season.
Despite the number of fouls in the final quarter, Grigonis was undoubtedly Zelgiris’ hero throughout the game, providing 22 points, followed by Arthuras Milkanis finishing with 11 of his own.
Fenerbahce – Olympiacos 77:84
In the first quarter Olympiacos, who have not won their last three Euroleague games, started excellently. The Greeks scored 27 points including a 0:11 run in the first 10 minutes. In the second quarter the Turks came back into the game, and as soon as they were able to equalize, Jan Wesley scored a basket and an offense and the momentum shifted to Fenner, who finished the half with a four-point lead.
In the third quarter the Turks’ advantage increased, as Wesley continued on his own, finishing with 17 points and 8 of 8 from the field. In the last quarter, Fener’s star got a rest and the last ten minutes were mostly Garbage Time, while Sasha and Zankov narrowed the gap a bit, which had already reached 15, with three threes, but of course that was not enough for the Greeks.
