The team said he is retiring after Shane’s previous knee injury worsened and he was in excruciating pain and unable to move.

‘I knew the challenge hung on the issue on my knee. By the time I woke up in the morning I was so exhausted I couldn’t move, ‘he said.

Shane decided he and his wife Deb had to pull out of the race after being put in a climber.

‘I was completely devastated and not only for myself but for Debora as well, for taking her out of the race,’ he admitted.
