Tragedy in Givat Zeev. The two-year-old toddler who drowned yesterday at his home died last night (Thursday) at Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital, after doctors’ efforts to save him failed. The hospital said that “unfortunately, despite the efforts of the medical staff, at midnight the death of the toddler who was evacuated to the pediatric emergency room was determined when he was in a more serious condition and unconscious after drowning.”
Preliminary investigation reveals that the home hot tub was covered, but that there was a small puddle on the cover and the toddler, who apparently climbed on the cover, got stuck with his head inside the puddle and drowned.
On Tuesday, a nine-month-old baby drowned in a bathtub at his home in Acre. MDA personnel treated him initially and also performed resuscitation operations. Afterwards, he was evacuated to Nahariya Hospital.
According to the organization Before Child Safety, this is the first case in 2021 of a drowning death of a toddler. In the last five years (2021-2016), 100 children have drowned, ten of them in 2020. About a third of the drownings in recent years have occurred in and around the home.

Orly Silvinger, CEO of the organization Before Child Safety: “We send condolences to the family. It is commonly thought that the home is the safest place for children, especially in a closure – but most children’s accidents occur at home. Only in recent weeks have we heard of two cases of toddlers drowning in a bathtub, and today a toddler lost his life in a puddle piled up on the pool cover. It is important to understand that a toddler can also drown in shallow water a few inches deep. Children are attracted to the water, but because the center of gravity is in the upper body, they tend to fall into the water with the face forward. Once their mouth and nose are covered in water, they are in a drowning state and cannot warn that they are in danger or shout for help. Within minutes they could lose their lives. We call on parents Do not tell me this will not happen – in a water environment do not leave the children unattended even for a moment. Bathtubs, buckets and any other water reservoir are emptied immediately after use. “
