The ombudsman is threatening to intervene in the work of the Ministry of Finance

The Attorney General, Dr. Avichai Mandelblit, this evening (Wednesday) sent a letter to the Minister of Finance, Israel Katz, in which he addressed the issue of promoting economic plans during the election period. Mandelblit says there is a clear message that the ombudsman has warned the finance minister that an election economy should be avoided, otherwise legal advisers will have to intervene.

The adviser wrote regarding economic plans being formulated by the Ministry of Finance to assist in the corona crisis and stressed that “we are in the election period deciding on the government, including ministries and government ministries, a duty of make-up and restraint regarding decisions, resource allocation and legislative initiatives.”

In a letter sent by Mandelblit, he expressed readiness to legally support various government economic initiatives, but at the same time sought to warn the ombudsman “against improper use of government power and state resources for propaganda or gaining an unfair advantage for a particular party or candidate.”

The Spokesman further clarified to Minister Katz that “as long as it is decided to promote such a plan, it must be ensured that the decisions and initiatives presented by the government will be made within the provisions of the law and while maintaining the necessary restraint and restraint during elections for reasons listed above and in early coordination with professionals.” .

The letter was signed by the ombudsman, stating that “employees of the legal advisory system will of course continue to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Government, in order to ensure that decisions made under the program reflect an appropriate balance between all considerations and do so professionally and efficiently.”

In response to the ombudsman’s directive to the finance minister to coordinate with him in advance the promotion of possible economic plans during the election period, the Movement for Governance and Democracy stated that “the fact that we are in an election period does not make the attorney general prime minister, Or obtain his prior consent to advance economic or other plans. “The ombudsman’s directive was given without authority and we hope that the ministers of the government and the Minister of Finance in general will act in accordance with their duty and powers for the benefit of the citizens of the State of Israel.”

“The current government is not a transitional government and is not an outgoing government, but even if it was, the Basic Law of the government states that there is no governmental vacuum and that until a new government takes office, the current government must continue in office,” the government said. “Status or position in the supervision of the government, or the reasonableness of its actions.”
