The Museum of Moving Picture Academy – the largest U.S. institution dedicated to the arts, sciences and filmmaking artists – is opening its doors to the public on September 30, 2021 to share experiences and insights. offer about films and filmmaking.
The 300,000-square-foot museum campus in Los Angeles was designed by Pritzker-award-winning architect Renzo Piano and contains seven stories of permanent and temporary exhibition galleries including a conservation studio, special event venues, cafe and store. The dynamic film center will be connected to the nearby Saban building by glass bridges, which will include a state-of-the-art 1,000-seat theater, roof and family terrace with panoramic views of the Hollywood Mountains.

To open them, five introductory demonstrations will be presented. The basic display, Cinema Stories, spans three floors and connects audiences to a distinctive, complex, diverse and international history of motion pictures. All aspects of the arts and sciences in filmmaking will be explored here highlighting different films, artists, times, genres and more.
The second exhibition will celebrate the work of a renowned Japanese animation director and Tatler’s Culture List 2021 honouree, Hayao Miyazaki. It marks the first American sequel dedicated to the acclaimed filmmaker and himself. The show will feature over 300 items and explore Miyazaki’s six-year career including his major animated films such as Totoro my neighbor and Spirited Away.
Next show, The Road to the Cinema: Selected from the Richard Balzer Collection, on the Saban building of the museum. It looks at the history of visual entertainment that led to cinema ingenuity such as shadow plays, peepshows, magic lanterns, zoetropes, praxinoscopes to the Cinématographe Lumière, the world’s first successful film projector.
