09:20 – The highest positive rate for Koruna – in the ultra-Orthodox localities
The third full closure is expected to end next Thursday at the end of two weeks, but the Ministry of Health is expected to request an extension for another week. The Corona Cabinet will discuss the issue apparently on Tuesday or Wednesday. At present, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet announced whether he supports the Ministry of Health’s demand, and he is waiting for the data before formulating his decision. Meanwhile, the localities with the highest positive rate in corona tests are ultra-Orthodox localities, or those in which a large part of the population belongs to the ultra-Orthodox sector.
For example, in Beitar Illit, 29% of the tests conducted for the city’s residents last week were positive, compared with 28% in the week between January 3 and 9. Since Sunday, 1,274 new infections have been diagnosed in the city. In Elad, 23% of the tests are positive, compared with 18.4% in the previous week. The city has been diagnosed with 1,007 infections in the past week.
Also, in Modi’in Illit, 20% of the tests conducted in the past week were positive, compared with 18.5% in the week between January 3 and 9. In the city – where about 78,000 people live – 2,393 new verified people have been diagnosed in the last seven days. In Bnei Brak, the positive rate in the last week was about 19%, compared to 15% in the previous seven days. A total of 3,202 new infections have been diagnosed in the city in the last seven days.
Jerusalem has the highest number of active patients in the country and in fact almost one in five active patients lives in the capital. In the last seven days the positive rate was about 17% and in the first week of January the figure was 14%. In the city, 10,250 new infections were diagnosed this week.
On the other hand, there are localities where the rate of positives is lower than the average this week – which stands at about 7.5%. In Tel Aviv, the positive rate this week was 4%, compared to 3.7% in the first week of January. As of Sunday, 1,114 new infections have been diagnosed in the city. In Ramat Gan, there was a decrease in the positive rate – 3.4% this week, compared to 4.1% the week before. In the city, 377 new infections were diagnosed this week. In Nazareth, too, there was a decrease in the positive rate this week from 15.7% to 15.2%. In the city where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited this week, 557 new diagnoses have been diagnosed since Sunday.
09:15 – After the vaccination: Rabbi Israel Meir Lau was diagnosed with corona
Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau was found positive for Corona after receiving the two doses of the vaccine against the virus. Rabbi Lau, 83, chairman of the Yad Vashem Council and former chief rabbi of Israel, was one of the first public figures to receive the first vaccine, immediately after the start of the national operation.
It is estimated that he was infected by his wife, who was exposed to a verified patient and was also found to be positive, and it is not clear whether he was infected even before the second dose of vaccine. In any case, the rabbi’s family was not surprised, as maximum immunity is obtained only a few days after receiving the second dose – and these have not yet passed. Since Thursday, 6,399 new job seekers have been registered, while since December 27, the day the third closure began, a total of 129,747 new job seekers have been registered, of which 68,821 have been registered since the closure was tightened, representing 53.8% of all applicants since the third closure began.
