The head of Love Island admits the show may not go ahead in 2021

Things are looking worse for Love Island 2021, as one of the top leaders on the show has admitted that he may not be able to go ahead this year.

Carolyn McCall, CEO of ITV, was recently asked where the show stands, after the summer series set in 2020 amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Her response: ‘I don’t know.’

As The Sun reports, McCall said: ‘We want to put Love Island on the air because it’ s been off the air for a while. We didn’t do it last summer.

‘We’re looking at all our options right now. The pandemic makes it difficult. ‘

Its first winter edition took place in January 2020, just as the global health crisis began to rise.

Extensive illness, limited travel and social distance meant the production was unable to return in its normal summer slot in June.

The series is usually filmed in Majorca, with the winter edition shot in South Africa. But travel to both places is not currently allowed, with Brits unsure what will be in the summer of 2021.

This comes as it was reported that the series could be filmed in Devon or Cornwall, as the show’s leaders prepare to change places to a UK beach this year.

According to reports Saturday, those behind the scenes have been keen to line up some spots on home shores after the show was canceled last year.

A source told The Sun: ‘As a precautionary measure, producers have looked at a number of sites in the UK to host the series, so if travel restrictions remain tight they have a backup plan.

Cornwall was chosen, as well as Torquay, the Isles of Scilly and even Barry Island, where Gavin and Stacey were filmed.

‘ITV bosses are also concerned about the backlash of fans against the show if competitors are allowed to go off claiming work causes but the rest of the country is still stuck at home.’

MailOnline has contacted Love Island representatives, who declined to comment.

She said: ‘I’ve heard about a few people who are in the interview process and it’s so interesting – I wish I could go back in time and be in a position again.

‘I don’t want you to say who I might be in trouble for that – they may be ignored. They’re just friends of friends – only a few people I know. ‘

Georgia said it had ‘heard from people at ITV’ that filming the winter series in the new location was ‘a real struggle’ and that they would want to return to Spain.
