The Biden administration will harness efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to efforts to boost the U.S. economy and create new jobs, US President-elect Joe Biden promised at an event over the weekend in which he unveiled his future administration’s climate team.

As part of his speech on Saturday, the president-elect pledged to make climate change the cornerstone of the Corona crisis recovery plan, calling for the construction of half a million electric car charging stations, the construction of 1.5 million energy-efficient homes and public housing units, and the establishment of a “civil climate force” Climate and conservation. Yes he promised to prioritize environmental justice and bring back the regulations repealed by Trump.

“The climate team will be ready for action from day one, and it’s imperative because we literally have no time to waste,” Biden said at an event in Delaware.

“Gentlemen, we are in crisis. Just as we need to be united in response to Corona, so we need to be united in the national response to climate change,” Biden said.

When he enters the Oval Office in January, Biden will face a troubled reality left behind by outgoing President Donald Trump, who in his four years in office repealed 84 environmental protection regulations, some from the days of previous Republican presidents. Trump used to regularly mock climate scientists and worked to increase fossil fuel production.

Gina McCarthy, the director of former President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency, who Biden has appointed as the new head of the White House’s climate policy, will serve as senior deputy. The team itself includes a combination of institutional and progressive figures. Two of the main ones will be Congressman Dov Halland, Biden’s candidate for secretary of state who was among the initiators of the Green Deal’s progressive side program, and Jennifer Greenholm, the former Michigan governor whom Biden is expected to appoint as secretary of energy from the establishment side.

“The president-elect and vice president-elect know that the issues before us are woven into areas such as justice, good jobs and reducing disparities,” Halland said at the event. Greenholm added: “Clean energy is the world’s most promising sector for job creation and economic growth. In the next two decades countries and companies will invest trillions in electric cars, batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, appliances and energy-efficient buildings. Benefits will be created. The road to recovery begins with the construction, production and deployment of these products here in the United States and their worldwide export.
