Despite the decision not to award the grants to the “Corona Year” medalists, it eventually happened. After a particularly successful year in Olympic sports with a variety of medals, the Olympic Committee in Israel and the Ministry of Culture and Sports presented the incentives to athletes in a special ceremony held yesterday (Monday) at the offices of the Olympic Committee in Tel Aviv.
The incentives were awarded to the medal winners at the European and World Championships in 2020 in a very limited format, capsular by industry, in accordance with the Corona guidelines. The total incentives for 2020 for athletes and coaches amounted to more than one million shekels.
The year 2020 was one of the most successful years for Israeli athletes at the European and World Championships, despite the cancellation of many competitions during the year due to the corona crisis, including in the leading disciplines in Olympic movement such as athletics and swimming. In 2020, the “Year of the Corona”, Israeli athletes won 14 medals at the European Championships and one medal at the World Championships. At the European Championships, Israeli athletes won five gold medals (record number), four silver medals and five bronze medals. At the World Championships, Israel won one bronze medal.
The incentives for the winners were given by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Hili Trooper, and the Chairman of the Israel Olympic Committee, Yigal Carmi. In his remarks to the athletes, the minister said Trooper Corps: “The excellence of each and every one of you makes us all excellent. You are the mirror of Israeli society, you are the Israeli story of professionalism, achievement, modesty, values and virtues. “
