Occasionally shocking cases emerge from the world of sports and another one has rocked the entire United States in recent hours. Former Olympic gymnastics coach John Gedert has ended his life after being accused of sexual assault and human trafficking.
Gadhart, 63, who led the United States gymnastics team to a gold medal at the London Olympics, ran a gym for years where the events in question took place. Last night (Thursday) Dana Nessel read out the charges against Gadhart including sexual assault against children aged 13 to 16 and 20 cases of human trafficking while using “force, deception and coercion” against the young athletes who came to his institute to train.
If that wasn’t enough, Gadhart worked closely with Larry Nasser (the former Olympic team doctor who was accused of sexually abusing girls, including Simon Bales) and was accused of deliberately lying to law enforcement when asked about his crimes. According to the indictment, three of Nasser’s assaults were carried out at an institute run by Gadhart and in the trial of a former gymnastics team doctor his name was mentioned by a number of victims as someone who ignored Nasser’s signs of abuse and use of his own abusive training methods.
“John broke us in the physical and psychological sense and Larry was there to reconnect us,” Sarah Klein, one of the two victims, described chillingly. “They used the ‘good cop – bad cop’ method from the beginning and got the best out of it. They allowed each other to abuse each other. Without John, Larry might not have serially abused those children during the 30 years. Without Larry, John would not have. Breaking those children in those years. “
