The famous abbey road sign with the Beatles hits the auction block

Beatles music collectors and aficionados will eventually have the opportunity to take ownership of one of the most iconic pieces of Beatles history: the iconic Abbey Road street – home of Abbey Road Studios – is officially hitting the auction block.

Abbey Road’s authentic street sign is currently listed by Catherine Southon Auctioneers, and, according to a recent one Hypebeast report, the sign is just one of many authentic road signs currently being sold by Westminster City Council, with the hope of raising money raised for civil services in the area.

“This collection provides a unique opportunity to share in the history of our city,” said deputy director Melvyn Caplan in a statement. “These are the original landmarks that have been on the streets of London in recent years – through historical times and cultural milestones.”

Described by the auction house as an enamelled iron street sign for Abbey Road NW8, City of Westminster, with distinctive sans serif black and red letters originally invented by Sir Misha Black in 1967, the font is unique to Westminster signs and under copyright law, in fact prohibited from being copied anywhere else in the world. Collectors will also be pleased to learn that the sign will be sold along with a signed certificate of authenticity.

Applicants should also be aware that the road sign has been hanging outdoors and has been exposed to the elements, and as a result wear and tear is expected – but overall it is in very good condition with the time it has spent as, also, a real road sign.

Interested in finding out more about the road sign auction or sign up to bid for yourself? More information can be found on Catherine Southon Auctioneers’ official website – but you’ll want to be quick. The special piece of Beatles history closes next week, March 3, 2021 and has already surpassed the estimated £ 2,000 GBP price by over £ 7,000.
