‘The Division 2’ Old Seasons ‘Rerunning’ is how it works on new content

Ubisoft, despite Massive’s desire to make Star Wars and Avatar games, has decided to continue supporting Division 2 with content in some form or another for a little longer to come.

But what will that look like … a little weird, and especially unusual for the live service genre.

In a new blog post detailing what Massive will be working with Ubisoft Bucharest, we learned that there will be a new game mode (not a reprinted one), and that they will new ways to promote your agent to work on building diversity and flexibility.

It’s fine, but the upcoming new content is still a long way off, and in the meantime, Section 2 will continue with its seasons, but by “refreshing” old seasons.

For example, the blog says, season 5 will be like season 1 again, it will “recycle” that season and its missions and targets so that you can do anything that might you lose when that season originally started. There will be new costume events and some updates on the game’s health title, but the content of the season will be stuff you’ve already played. And it is understandable that this can be done for more than one season, with no indication of when the new material being worked on will arrive.

… Is definitely an option. It’s hard to say, Destiny 2 is a remake of a past season of content, though I believe we should admit that the game has done things like replace old Destiny 1 zones and strikes as “new.” But just as suddenly Season of the Forge would again be a bit strange. Then again I miss those weapons …

Anyway, given the circumstances, this may be the best course of action for Division 2, as they are unable to both produce new quarterly content and also work on these major improvements coming later. Pressure again is the kind of live service where there is not enough content to keep people going all the time without some snapshots, but the Division is in a better position than the Anthem or Avengers recently killed by the yawning gaps between the fall of new content.

The future of the Department as a franchise remains unclear. I wrote “eulogy” for the game when I heard about Star Wars news, because I thought it would be pretty much over. But there seems to be enough connection to keep going something for the game, even though the pace of content is going to change dramatically from the last two years. An entirely new game in the franchise, however, is still so likely to come soon, with what most Massive is working on now.

Anyway, we’ll see how this goes. More to come as new information becomes available.
