The border crossing to Sinai will open on Tuesday

Shortly before the beginning of Shabbat, government ministers voted in the afternoon (Friday) in favor of opening the Taba crossing for the departure of vaccinated and recovering Israelis from Corona to the Sinai Peninsula.

According to regulations approved by the government, the Airports Authority will regulate the number of departures and arrivals through the Taba border crossing to about 300 departing and returning 300 passengers a day as a first step. The regulation will be carried out through a limited sale of the transit fees, and at the time of departure it is required to present the payment confirmation for the requested day.

Behind the vote a confrontation developed in the government. Minister Yuli Edelstein refused to limit the departure to only 300 vacationers and demanded additional restrictions, and there was harsh criticism of the Ministry of Health which took the time – since the opening was generally planned for Monday – and did not formulate regulations. The outline went up for a vote after blue and white ministers announced that if there was no vote – they would not approve any further regulation in the government.

“I am pleased to announce that at these minutes the government is pointing to the rules for opening the Taba crossing, starting this coming Tuesday, after more than a year of closure,” wrote Tourism Minister Orit Farkash with a white brush. “This is a start. A happy holiday to everyone, including Chinese lovers.” It should be noted that in terms of the counter-terrorism headquarters there is still a travel warning to the peninsula.

This is how you can go to Sinai

According to the Ministry of Health’s epidemiological opinion, the Egyptian response to the virus in Egypt and Jordan indicates an increased risk of patients arriving at border crossings. The ministry estimates that entry from Egypt and Jordan could lead to a significant worsening of the level of morbidity in Israel through “import” mutations.

Passengers will be required to perform a corona test twice, for the first time in Egypt, at one of the test stations deployed in Sinai, the cost of a corona test is about $ 20 per person. The second inspection must be carried out at the Taba crossing before entering back into Israel at the “Terem” position, which set up the inspection system at the border for the benefit of the Jordanian workers.

Private vehicles from Israel will not be able to cross the border similar to the period before the Corona, as there is not enough manpower to handle them. Vacationers who want to get to Eilat by car can park it at the old airport in the city.
