Despite the corona crisis, and in a way that may be surprising, the closures on the economy, layoffs and unemployment, the average wage in the economy per employee post continued to rise in 2020 and stood at about NIS 11,540 gross. This is an increase of 7% compared to 2019.
This fact can be explained by the fact that the average wage (as opposed to the median wage) is affected by extreme data, and since the main victims in the economy as a result of the corona crisis (those fired or expelled) are mainly low-wage earners, high-income wages continued to climb. The general average also rose, in a way that does not reflect the crisis, since, as will be recalled, more than a million people in Israel were fired or deported as a result of the corona.
However, the impact of the corona was certainly evident in the number of employee jobs which fell by 10% to about 3.37 million jobs, compared to 2019. As expected, the hospitality services industry suffered the most severe, and the number of jobs in it was cut by 41%. The arts, entertainment and leisure industry blew at the back with a drop of about 36%.
