Former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy has said his first complaints about a female Doctor were due to “stupid sexuality” and that he would like the role to be played by a colored person next.
It was said in 2015 that McCoy, who played the doctor’s seventh incarnation between 1987 and 1996, said: “The Lord should never be resurrected as a woman.”
He also rejected the opinion of a female Doctor, saying: “I’m sorry, but no – Doctor Who is a male character, just like James Bond. If they changed it to be politically correct, it would destroy the dynamics between the Doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show. I support women, but I’m not convinced by the cultural need for Doctor Who. ”
But in a new interview for Radio Times, McCoy acknowledged that his initial complaints about throwing Jodie Whittaker into office were largely motivated by sexual orientation.
“It was silly sexuality… I thought, ‘Why is it going to change? ‘But after five minutes she was the Doctor, as far as I was concerned. ”
Whittaker became the 13th Doctor and the first female actress to play the character in 2017 after previous successor Peter Capaldi decided to leave the show.
Profitability has been growing for the past few weeks that the next series of Doctor Who, which is set to appear for this fall, is Whittaker’s latest. Neither the BBC nor Whittaker has commented on the rumors.
When asked who he would like to see as Whittaker’s successor, McCoy said: “He must be someone with a lot of character. He cannot be someone handsome, handsome, elegant and character. I was surprised when they found Matt Smith. It looked about 12, but nonetheless it was great! One minute he looks 12, the next he looks 125. He has the perfect Doctor Who face. So surprising. A man of good color. ”
Holby City regular Jo Martin was the first BAME actress to take the role when she played an incarnation called The Fugitive Doctor in two shows last year. However, the long-term condition of the character has not been determined.
Martin, actor and comedian Richard Ayoade and Michaela Coel, creator and star of I May Destroy You, have all been hailed as potential fans if Whittaker leaves the show .
