Leo Messi and Luis Suarez (Reuters)
The main course
Luis Suarez is known as a “wide beast”, but is sometimes surprising from farther distances. The 34-year-old Uruguayan is starring this season at Atletico Madrid, who proudly leads the Spanish league table and runs for the championship. In 2014 the championship was achieved after a dramatic draw at the Camp Nou in the last round, and this season too Barcelona has a key role in the Colchoneros’ ambitions.
Much has been written about Barça and Ronald Koeman’s decision to give up Suarez and transfer him to the team’s direct rival for the title. Indeed, Suarez has become the best athletic player of the season, the one who scores goals and brings the victories with his own feet (and his head).
One could even go a step further and say that Suarez has become “Atletico’s Messi”, at least in terms of his dependence on him. Pioneers like Albero Murata and Diego Costa usually provided the goods, but Suarez is always there and brings the points. The defensive side has traditionally been Atletico’s strong card, Suarez greatly upgrading the offensive side.
On Sunday Suarez sent a perfect free-kick in a 2-4 win over Cadiz, the team that has already surprised Barça and Real Madrid this season. Then, a few hours apart, Messi scored a similar free-kick against Athletic Bilbao en route to Barcelona’s 1-2 draw. Everyone is talking about Messi’s contract being leaked, but the real default is the release of Suarez. Atletico says thank you.
Tapas, in small
“It means the team is working well with the right mentality to achieve the goals. That’s the way to do it. ”, Luis Suarez Asked about Atletico’s eight consecutive wins.
