Steven Gerrard has a Liverpool dream but hopes Jurgen Klopp will stay ‘for several years’

Steven Gerrard has admitted that his “dream” is to one day be manager of Liverpool – but he hopes that Jurgen Klopp will remain under his control “for several years”.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard, 40, who has led Rangers to the first Scottish Premier League title in 10 years, told ITV that Klopp was “one of the best managers”.

Liverpool fell to their sixth Premier League loss on Sunday to leave the Premier League title defense in tattoos, but Gerrard said of Klopp: “I love him”.

“Liverpool fans don’t want me to be the manager of Liverpool Football Club,” Gerrard said. “They want Jurgen Klopp to continue as Liverpool manager – and I totally agree with all of them.

“We shouldn’t talk about this, one of our best managers is running our club at the moment, I love it.

“I hope he stays for a few more years. But I have a job here. I don’t think it’s helpful to talk about this and I hope Jurgen stays in Liverpool for a number of years. ”

Gerrard made 710 appearances and won nine trophies for Liverpool during his 19-year playing career.

He hung up his boots in 2016 after a spell at the Los Angeles Galaxy and left his career as a youth coach at Anfield to become Rangers boss in May 2018.

“Liverpool is my club,” he said. “I had a good trip. Is it a dream of mine to one day become Liverpool manager? Yes, yes, but not yet and who says I will ever be good enough.

“There are a lot of great managers who would all want the chance to manage Liverpool. We have to respect Jurgen in the first place. ”
