Serie B underdogs set up SPAL’s Juventus underdogs after a 2-0 win over Sassuolo … as Atalanta are also in shape reserve a place in the Italian Cup semi-finals after a 3-3 draw 1 past Cagliari

  • SPAL won the second division an unexpected 2-0 win over Sassuolo’s Serie A team
  • Simone won Missiroli and Lorenzo Dickmann to put the visitors through
  • Atalanta made their way past Cagliari uselessly in a normal 3-1 victory

The second-tier SPAL against Serie A will beat Juventus in the semi-finals of the Italian Cup after their 2-0 win over Sassuolo at 10-man on Thursday.

SPAL is the only Serie B side left in the tournament.

Sassuolo, who had a good start in the Serie A season, was the better side in the first half. But the game turned just after the restart when midfielder Filip Duricic was sent off for a dangerous attack on SPAL defender Leonardo Sernicola.

SPAL took the lead two minutes later when Demba Seck ran into the area and pulled the ball back for Simone Missiroli to enter the bottom right corner.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 58th minute. Marco D’Alessandro added a cross from the left to the back post where Lorenzo Dickmann moved in from close range.

Sassuolo hit the post twice in the game.

Later, Atalanta in form defeated Cagliari 3-1 to advance to a quarter-final where they will face neither Lazio nor Parma.

Aleksej Miranchuk broke the lock on a half-time stroke. The Russian forward has now scored his first time for Atalanta in Serie A, the Champions League and the Italian Cup.

Cagliari keeper Guglielmo Vicario had taken several saves off in the first half under the Atalanta siege and continued to do the same after the break.

And the visitors found hope when Riccardo Sottil dropped 10 minutes into the second half.

But Atalanta finished the game shortly afterwards with two goals in three minutes from Luis Muriel and Bosko Sutalo.
