Space-age wine returns to earth for the taste of experts

Twelve bottles of Bordeaux wine are heading back down to Earth after going around the world in the name of science.

SpaceX “s Dragon cargo capsule along with its cargo will focus on a shower in the Gulf of Mexico late Wednesday.

But none of the bottles will be opened until the end of February.

Space Cargo Unlimited, the Luxembourg start-up company behind the trials, will then open a bottle or two of wine tasting outside this world in Bordeaux with some of France’s leading connoisseurs and experts.

Months of chemical experimentation will follow as researchers are keen to see how space changes the structure of the wine.

Nicolas Gaum, CEO and co-founder of Space Cargo Unlimited, said agricultural products like grapes need to adapt to harsher conditions due to climate change. The mission has also brought wines into orbit, and they plan to put them back on the ground to see if they have more flexibility. Ordinary wines can fall prey to changes in weather, especially extreme temperatures, as well as rot.

Space Cargo Unlimited hopes to capture what has been learned by stressing the plants in weight loss and turning them into the strongest plants on Earth.
